He started development of Ruby in 1993, so it's actually as old as Java. Now he works for Network Applied Communication Laboratory Inc. (NaCl, also known as netlab.jp) which has sponsored Ruby development since 1997. He also serves as a chairman of the Ruby Association, a non-profit organization focused on supporting Ruby.
